Come paint summer shores with Marlene! Bring your favourite lakeside photograph and create a lovely, personal watecolour under the guidance of watercolour artist Marlene Madole.
In this 2-Tuesdays class, different techniques are covered on the use of transparent watercolours. Students learn to maximize the use of wet-on-wet, graduated washes, and build with glazing and direct painting.
The class is geared to instruction by demonstration, using examples, one-on-one critiques, and lots of hands-on painting. Whether you are new to watercolours or looking to improve your skills, this class is perfect.
Materials List
This list is a good, basic supply list for watercolour, which I will be using. Feel free to bring any watercolour supplies that you already have. I don’t recommend buying sets of paint or brushes – you are unlikely to use them all and for a similar price you can get better qualityprimary colours, or a single brush.
Watercolour Paint
7 Tubes of Professional Grade Watercolour Paint, Transparent, Primary Colours:
Winsor & Newton, Artist's Quality, 5 ml tubes2 Yellows: Transparent Yellow (or Winsor Yellow); and Raw Sienna
2 Blues: French Ultramarine Blue; and Winsor Blue - Red Shade
2 Reds: Permanent Rose; and Permanent Alizarin Crimson
1 Earth: Burnt Sienna

(block is glued on all four sides to a stiff cardboard, Arches block uses black glue)100% Cotton, 140lb, Cold Pressed, such as Arches, 10” x 14" (or 9” x 12”)
Watercolour Paper – 1 Sheet:
100% Cotton, 140lb, Cold Pressed, 22” x 30”, made by: Arches (or T.H. Saunders Waterford),
ripped into 3 quarter sheets (11” x 15”) and two 1/8th sheet for studies (11” x 7.5”).Bring paper in full-sheet – We will rip paper in the first class, with the instructor’s straight edge.
2 Waterproof Painting Supports: 11.75” x 15 5/8” white Plasticor (or Plexiglass or Masonite covered with Mactac) and 10 medium Office Clips.

White Plastic Palette - with about 20 deep wells for mixing paint, ideally with a lid and slant wells. i.e. Zoltan Szabo (or Robert E. Wood); or 2 children’s Plastic Palettes or 2 opaque white ice cube trays

Eraser Kneadable Rubber: Staedtler (or Pelikan GE20)
Eraser Staedtler Mars Plastic
Stencil Brush, size 4, with natural bristles
Water Dropper Bottle, 125 ml
Natural Silk Sea Sponge: 1.5” to 2” (from art store or drug store)
Mist Tube by Derwent (or Spray Bottle: makeup or travel from drug store, or for ferns from a garden centre)
From Home
Roll of Magic Tape (3M office tape)
Paper Towel roll (near the end of a roll)
Face Cloth (or an old hand towel)
Tube 7/8” in diameter (centre cardboard tube from an empty saran wrap roll or tin foil)
Sketchbook 8.5” x 5.5” (or 8.5” x 11” blank sheets of computer paper or newsprint)
3 x Water Containers: white or clear plastic. One 500 ml and Two 1 litre, i.e. from yogurt or honey
About Marlene Madole
Marlene, Life Member and Past President of The Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour (CSPWC), has exhibited her watercolour paintings for over 40 years including in Vancouver, and Toronto, represented Canada in the FabrianoInAquarello festival in Italy, and the CSPWC’s International Exhibitions: Open Water, Mexican Biennial, and exchanges with France, and California.
Recipient of Ontario Arts Council’s Grants and selected for an Artist Residency in Georgian Bay Islands National Park, Marlene’s artworks are in collections in Canada, USA, and Europe, will be gifted to the Royal Collection Trust for the CSPWC’s 100th Anniversary. Her work is available at her Glen Williams studio.
