Learn how to suggest light and atmosphere with simple shapes and to use warm and cool colour relationships to create a sense of glow.

Join painter Rick Worthington for a one-day oil painting workshop focused on capturing mood and light at dusk. Working from Rick’s original painting, students will learn how to suggest light and atmosphere with simple shapes and expressive colour. The emphasis will be on painting loosely, simplifying forms, and using warm and cool colour relationships to create a sense of glow.

This class is suitable for beginners and intermediate painters. Step-by-step demonstrations and individual guidance provided.

Materials List

  • Bristle brushes (Maggiollys carries the HJ Acryloil line)

  • Flats #4, #6 and #8 and Filberts same sizes

  • 1 stretched canvas size (or canvas board) size 12” x 12” or larger

  • Palette cup

  • Palette (wood/glass or disposable) 9” x 12” or larger

  • Palette knife

  • Odourless mineral spirits (for brush cleaning) in a mason jar or brush washer with lid

  • Linseed oil (optional)

  • Winsor & Newton Winton or Gamblin 1980 oil colours

    • Cadmium Yellow Light

    • Cadmium red light

    • Ultramarine Blue

    • Viridian or Phthalo Blue

    • Titanium White

  • Rags or paper towels

  • Pencil and eraser

  • Old clothes or apron

About Rick

Rick Worthington is a contemporary impressionist painter who lives and works in the artistic community of Elora, Ontario. As a full-time artist with a passion for painting en plein air, Rick fell under the spell of the impressionist masters including Mattiess and Sorolla.

Rick’s work is held in the permanent collection of the Centre Wellington Museum and Archives along with private collections throughout North America and Europe and can be found at the Abbostford, BC Gallery. He has been featured in the magazine Sideroads of Waterloo Wellington and he has had a piece recognized in the Plein Air Magazine, having placed first in the magazines Salon Competition for Plein Air Water. Rick has won numerous plein air competitions including the Toronto Plein Air Competition, the Bellville Plein Air Competition, the Ontario Plein Air Society Challenge and the Elora Plein Air Competition. He has participated in numerous juried shows including the Sooke Fine Arts show, the TD Victoria Art Gallery Paint In, the Toronto Arts Project Juried Show and the Insights Juried Art Show.
