Discovering Facial Expressions

There is more to a portrait than its features. In this course students will be guided beyond the fundamentals of a drawn and painted portrait. Students will discover how a smile, a laugh, a scream can transform all the other features resulting in emotional expressions.

Working from a combination of Photo References and Gesture drawings from a model.

Materials List

  • Canson XL Drawing pad. 70lbs. 11” x 14” Smooth Surface

  • Small set of Graphite Pencils

  • White Eraser

  • Kneadable Eraser

Painting Materials - needed for painting will be reviewed before purchasing

  • 16” x 20” Canvas Pad (not canvas paper)

  • Polymer (acrylic) or if working with traditional oil / water soluble oils the appropriate Odorless solvent

  • Your choice of opaque non-toxic paints (acrylics, water-soluble oils, traditional oil (odorless solvents only) including colours:

    • Cadmium Red

    • Ultra- marine Blue

    • Cadmium Yellow

    • Paynes Grey

    • Alizarin Crimson

    • Titanium White

  • Flat Paint palettes

  • Rags, towels, water container

  • Synthetic or bristle brushes assortment large to small

About Stephanie

Stephanie is an established multi-Disciplinary visual artist with over 40 years of experience in portrait and figurative painting. Her ability as a multi-disciplinary artist enables her to focus more on leading and fostering students, whether privately or as groups, towards imagination and self-expression in her workshops.

Recently she is the recipient of the 2023 Marty Award, from the Mississauga Arts Council, for the category of Established Artist in Traditional form and her mentorship in the arts for Peel region.
