Suitable for the absolute beginner, as well as for those who are looking to expand their painting experience, without being constrained by a follow-the-leader class approach.
Learn the essential techniques you need to paint confidently with Acrylics or Oils!
The journey begins with painting simple objects in order to understand light and it’s best friend: shadow. From there, students paint a still life using a 2-dimensional photo reference, as well as painting cloth fabric using a photo reference, before digging in and painting leafy foliage. Students also learn brush techniques and how to mix colour.
Starting with the anatomy of your paint, weekly projects explore innovative possibilities of your medium. All techniques and exercises will be carefully demonstrated, using photo reference, still life, and explained in an easy-to-follow, step-by-step format.
What kind of brush strokes, how to handle the brush, how to mix the paint
What is acrylic or oil paint, it’s properties and mediums
Sight techniques
Colour Theory and mixing
Understanding out to create form with light and shadow
Underpainting (monochromatic) to create a good base
Composition exercises using shape and colour
Students can expect to develop a working understanding of composition, value, colour, and brush techniques.

Stephanie is an established multi-Disciplinary visual artist with over 40 years of experience in portrait and figurative painting. Her ability as a multi-disciplinary artist enables her to focus more on leading and fostering students, whether privately or as groups, towards imagination and self-expression in her workshops.
Recently she is the recipient of the 2023 Marty Award, from the Mississauga Arts Council, for the category of Established Artist in Traditional form and her mentorship in the arts for Peel region.
