Learn all about the fun and health-giving practice of sketchbook journaling and discover the secrets of journalling for health and happiness. Students explore a host of techniques including collage, lettering, drawing, page design, rubber stamping, and printmaking.
Learn to carve rubber stamps and use a gel plate to make printed papers in your favourite colours. Students also spend a day hand binding our own journals.
This class is for all skill levels from beginner to advanced. No previous art experience is necessary. Experienced artists will discover new ways get creative in their sketchbook and beginners will realize they have what they need to put their thoughts on paper in beautiful ways.
Did you know? Journaling is back! Discover this wonderful way to ease stress, enhance mental health and build confidence as you explore ways to record and express your life. Drawing everyday is good for you! It’s your time to acquire a new (good) habit.
Some art supplies will be provided, and some you will bring:

Andrea began her fine arts training in 1979 just as the Vancouver School of Art was becoming Emily Carr College of Art. She continued her studies at Capilano College in North Vancouver. Andrea has worked in the graphic arts industry for 20 years, transitioning from design markers on a drafting board to Photoshop on a laptop computer. Recently, Andrea has begun painting again and is a member of Dufferin County’s Kame & Kettle artists’ group. Andrea is also active with Headwaters Arts, operating out of the historic Alton Mill Arts Centre.

Open to all levels of experience
Develop a better understanding of the "why" a painting looks good and is successful. Students paint a single, white tulip, focusing on subtle shadows, warm and cool undertones, and background contrast rather than pure, flat white paint.
Topics covered include:
How to use colour to effectively render white florals without them looking grey and chalky
How to capture the glow and luminescence
How to set up your florals for maximum drama and light; learn what makes a dynamic floral painting
Did you know? While bees do visit and pollinate white flowers, they generally prefer colours such as blue, purple, and yellow, which stand out more vividly in the way bees see the world.

In this 3-day workshop, you will form the floorcloth, glue the edges for a strong seam, create an acyrlic painting (subject matter your choice), and then watch it add life to any room in your house!
This is a fun, low pressure course which allows you to explore your creativity, and learn how to create awesome decor for your space.
Students are responsible to bring their own art and painting materials.
Cost of the floorcloth ($25/yard) is not included in ticket price; you can choose the size to work on and purchase it during the workshop.
Emilia is a graduate of OCAD, an abstract expressionist and the found and previous owner of Maggiolly's. She enjoys exploring the unknown in her paintings, often inspired by music, nature and emotions. Emilia loves providing her community with access to art supplies and classes, encouraging everyone to be creative and express themselves!

OPEN TO ALL LEVELS OF EXPERIENCE
Challenge yourself with Sumi-e painting and learn a new art form with award-winning sumi-e artist, Roslyn Levin.
Sumi-e is the century old art of painting using a brush, ink and thin rice-paper or washi. This course is suitable for all levels with the focus on techniques and on the Sumi-e vocabulary of strokes.
The artist depicts the essence of what he or she is trying to portray with as few brushstrokes as possible—simply and elegantly, but with strength in each line or shade.
Sumi-e is a mindfulness meditation. It is a metaphor for our journey through life, a way to grow spiritually, one brushstroke at a time. Join renowned Sumi-e artist Roslyn Levin and learn this beautiful Japanese art form in the heart of downtown Orangeville!
Over the course of six classes, learn how to paint a variety of flora and fauna including those pictured here in the class description.
Materials List
Recommended: “The Brush Dances” by Roslyn Levin, SCA
White Felt approximately 18”x18” or 20”x20”
From the art supply stores or Fabricland
1 - Sumi-e brush with hair about 1.25” long and a base about 1/4” wide
Goat hair, horse hair or wolf are appropriate
Washi or rice paper
It is best to get either the package of 40 sheets, or the roll in the cardboard tube

1 - Inkstone
1 - Inkstick. Note that the liquid ink is not appropriate
A small jar for water (about 1⁄2 cup)
A second small jar if you wish to incorporate colour
A white saucer or flat plate such as that used with a tea cup
2 - Small paperweights; small rocks or chopstick stands are appropriate
A washcloth to be used to remove excess ink – it will not be useful for anything else afterwards
Watercolours, if you wish to use them
About Roslyn Levin
Roslyn is an award-winning Oriental brushstroke or sumi-e artist, and has been creating her Zen paintings of animals, birds and nature for more than 35 years. Her work has been exhibited in Canada, England, Japan and China. She has been twice-blessed with The Ruth Yamada Award for Excellence in Sumi-e, in Sumi-e Artists of Canada Annual Juried Exhibit.
In 2009 Roslyn was recognized for "An Innovative and Personal Approach" from the Canadian & American Sumi-e Societies. The body, breath & brush are one with each brushstroke as she moves & breathes with the brush, reaching within to share her spirit with the image on the page. The key to this art form is simplicity, elegance, beauty, & serenity. Roslyn's work can be seen at Dragonfly Arts on Broadway in Orangeville.
